I spent most of my twenties suffering with back pain, and spent thousands on treating my back and neck, with varying degrees of success. I wanted to learn more about the body (and spine in particular) so I left my career in Insurance and retrained as a Chartered Physiotherapist.
After graduating from the University Of East London in 2004 I worked in the NHS in Surrey for three years. I left in 2007 to start my own Physiotherapy business in Berkshire (The Physio who comes to you) and opened my clinic in September 2010.
My role is quite diverse. As a Chartered Physiotherapist I work with Clients who have all manner of musculoskeletal injuries and problems. I also work with Clients who have Multiple Sclerosis and Strokes in their own homes, and various Medico-legal Companies who send me Clients injured in car accidents who often have whiplash type injuries.
I am one of the first Physiotherapists in the entire UK (one of only 15 Physios) trained in "Physiotherapy Instrument Mobilisation". It is a clever way of applying a quick and accurate force to mobilise and/or reposition a stuck joint, for example in the neck, back or pelvis. Potentially every joint in the body can be treated in this manner. It is evidence-based and follows established Physiotherapy principles. Over time it will slowly become much more popular in the UK, as it has already become in Australia. (http://physiotherapyinstrumentmobilisation.blogspot.com/)
I qualified as a Sports Massage Therapist in 2004 to cater for the obvious and increasing demand for Sports Massage treatments. You don't even have to be "sporty" to have a Sports Massage! There aren't too many Physiotherapists who carry out their own massage treatments these days, but I find it to be very effective, and can be used alongside a Physiotherapy programme if appropriate.
I also teach Nordic Walking because it is such a simple and effective rehab tool. In fact I found it to be useful on so many levels when my back had "gone" in 2009 (I could barely walk) that I took a course in it to become a Nordic Walking Instructor. It also happens to burn more calories than normal walking, lightens the load at most low back and lower limb joints, and strengthens postural and propulsive muscle groups.
I have a keen interest in posture as it affects all of us to some degree. I used to do Posture At Work Consultancy in London for the On Site Massage Company. At the time I also trained in On Site Massage, although I do not carry out this treatment these days. I keep the specialised chair, however, as it comes in useful for clients who can't lie down on my regular couch.
I live in Wooden Hill, midway between Bracknell and Crowthorne, with my partner and her son. I'm not anti-gym in the slightest, but I have a preference for functional fitness and training (more natural body movements), comprising Nordic Walking, suspension training, sled dragging, and sandbag training, to name a but a few. In 2012 I will be starting "Barefoot Running" which is very different in style and technique to running in regular trainers, and which I am looking forward to very much.
I hope this gives you more of an insight into my background, and hope to hear from you.
